Adjustable Air Beds

When it comes to the different types of available beds, there really are only four basic designs based on the type of mattress used. First, and most popular, is the traditional flat bed and inner spring mattress. Next is the water bed, followed by the memory foam and adjustable air beds. All four types of beds have their pros and cons with loyal fans of each defending their chosen bed to the death. As for adjustable air beds, they have long been the maligned orphan child of the bedding industry because of the misconceptions regarding the quality of air mattresses.

The Improvement in Adjustable Air Mattresses

The earliest air mattresses were thin, flimsy vinyl bags that provided little support and slowly leaked throughout a single night's use. They were primarily used for camping and overnight guests; never as a permanent sleep solution. Thankfully, all of that has changed as new innovations have improved the durability and comfort of the air mattress. Today, adjustable air beds are not only holding their own in the bedding market, but they are gaining overall market share on an annual basis.

The standard adjustable air bed is comprised of a durable, quality air bag, made of vinyl and encased in a sturdy, fabric casing. The bag itself is generally divided into multiple chambers which limits air movement and provides maximum support. Encasing the bag in the sturdy fabric casing gives additional support, prevents direct contact between the user and the bag, and protects the bag from punctures and other damage. As for the fabric casing itself, modern design and construction gives it the feel and appearance of a standard coil spring mattress. Most people can't even tell, at first glance, that they are looking at an adjustable air mattress.

Best Features of Adjustable Air Mattresses

The greatest feature of the adjustable air mattress is the ability to adjust firmness on the fly. This is especially helpful for couples who have different preferences, as they can purchase a dual-zone mattress which allows separate adjustment on either side. As air temperature changes so does the firmness of the mattress, but the touch of a button can accommodate and make the mattress comfortable again in a matter of minutes. The mattress can be adjusted to accommodate for aches and pains, surgical recovery, or flare-ups of arthritis. None of these things can be accomplished with the traditional inner spring mattress.

Air adjustable beds derive their comfort from the fact that the mattress conforms to the user's body. While memory foam mattresses do the same thing, those who prefer the air mattress usually do so because of the adjustable nature. And if you're worried about the quality of adjustable air beds, there's no need to be. Most manufacturers offer limited warranties for both mattresses and foundations; mattress life tends to be 15 to 20 years.

Adjustable air beds are not the right option for everyone, but for many they are. They are such wonderful beds in fact, that the manufacturers of adjustable air beds report very few returns.
